GAYATRI MANTRA

भूर्भुवः स्वः

तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं

भर्गो देवस्यः धीमहि

धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्

Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas. There is nothing more purifying, on the earth as well as in the heaven, than the Gayatri. The Japa of Gayatri brings the same fruit as the recitation of all the four Vedas. This single Mantra repeated three times a day brings great good (Kalyana or Mokshya). It is the supreme Mantra of the Vedas. It destroys all sins. It bestows splendid health, beauty, strength, vigour, vitality and magnetic aura in the face (Brahmic effulgence). Gayatri destroys the three kinds of Taapa of pain. Gayatri bestows on one the four kinds of Purushartha, viz, Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desired objects), and Moksha (Liberation or freedom). It destroys the three Granthis or knots of ignorance, Avidya, Kama and Karma. Gayatri purifies the mind.  Gayatri makes a man powerful and highly intelligent. The Gayatri is the greatest renunciation as well as the greatest Yoga. There is nothing superior to it in the world. But success is achieved not only by chanting the mantra, but by moulding one’s life in accordance with its precepts.

The Gayatri Mantra is :-

OM BHUR BHUVAH SVAH,

TAT SAVITUR VARENIAM, BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI,

DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT.

Each word of the Mantra signifies :-

Through these nine names the Lord is praised. ‘Dheemahi’ signifies worship of or meditation on the Lord. ‘Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat’ is a prayer . Herein there are five halts or stops viz., ‘Om’ is the first stop; ‘Bhur Bhuvah Svah’ the second; ‘Tat Savitur Varenyam’ the third; ‘Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi’ the fourth; and ‘Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat’  the fifth. While chanting and doing Japa of the mantra, one should stop a little at every stop or halt.

way to power

A man can repeat the Gayatri Mantra mentally, in all states, even while lying, sitting, walking, etc. There is no sin of commission or omission of any sort in its repetition. One should thus perform Sandhya-Vandana with this Gayatri Mantra three times everyday, in the morning, noon and evening. He is the real Brahmana who knows and understands thus the Gayatri. Without its knowledge he is an ignorant, thought he may be well versed in the four Vedas.

All the words should be repeated slowly without mutilation and with Akshara-Suddhi. One must not be hasty in the performance of Japa. One can make us many Purascharanas as one likes. But one should do it slowly and steadily.

By the sole repetition of the Gayatri one attains beatitude, even if one does not perform any other religious act. Sri Ramakrishna Parmahansa says, “The chanting of the Gayatri gives us strength.” Swami Vivekananda says, “The Gayatri gives good understanding. If any thing brings us near God it is the good understanding. He whose understanding is good has all deeds properly done.”

chant your way to power

By pronouncing the first four letters, “OM BHUR BHUVAH SVAH” the devotee feels that the word, the whole universe, is his home. This word and the next are within this house. It appears as if he is standing amidst The Sun, The Moon, The Stars and The Planets. The person who chants Gayatri should feel that rising above the earth he is standing in the infinite sky admidst the innumerable stars. Reaching there he should pronounce the Gayatri. This is the ancient best method of contemplating God. There is no way of Yoga better than this. By adopting this way, a person established his connect on with God. This cannot be achieved by any other means.”
